$74,086 in funding provided to community projects across the Kimberley

Projects in Broome, Kununurra and remote Aboriginal communities to benefit
Water Minister
Dave Kelly today announced the successful recipients of the latest round of the
Water Corporation’s Kimberley Community Grants Scheme in Broome.
Ten grassroots
projects aimed at supporting community health, education, the environment,
culture and the arts will share in $74,086 through the latest round of the
grants scheme.
The scheme is a
partnership with the Lions Club Broome and aims to empower community groups to
turn ideas into reality at a grassroots level.
Funds are
raised through the sale of hay produced by the Water Corporation’s Broome North
Wastewater Treatment Plant as an environmentally sustainable means of recycling
water.
The community
grants scheme has provided a total of $185,807 back to the community since it
began in 2016, funding 30 projects across the Kimberley.
The resounding
success of the program led to the scheme being expanded from just the West
Kimberley to the wider Kimberley region for the first time in this round.

the scheme supports are grassroots and often volunteer run, and it was my
pleasure to speak with some of the very worthy recipients today in Broome.

particularly impressed by Broome North Primary School’s project for a community
mural that will provide students with a unique learning opportunity to enhance
the picturesque Cable Beach esplanade.
“Now in its
fourth round, the Water Corporation and Lions Club Broome grants program has
provided an incredible $185,807 back to the community since 2016.”

Projects supported by round 4 of the Kimberley Community Grants Scheme:

| St John Ambulance (Bidyadanga, Beagle Bay and Lombadina) | $4,000.00 | Provision of lifesaving first aid training and essential equipment for three remote Aboriginal communities. One hundred people will receive training as part of the project, including 20 school children. |
| Federation of WA Police and Community Youth Centres (PCYC) (Broome) | $9,800.00 | The Broome PCYC will work with at risk youth to build and maintain an edible and waterwise garden as part of its youth support program. |
| Mowanjum Aboriginal Art and Culture Centre (Mowanjum) | $8,100.00 | The Song Weavers Water Project will bring members of the Mowanjum Aboriginal community together to share stories about the preciousness of water and its value. |
| Roebuck Primary School (Broome) | $2,200.00 | Roebuck Primary School will install a large-scale, educational feature wall showcasing the six seasons of Broome’s traditional owners, the Yawuru people. |
| Broome North Primary School (Broome) | $10,000.00 | Students from Broome North Primary School and local residents will work with a professional mural artist to transform a water tank into water themed art. |
| Broome Bird Observatory (BBO) (Broome) | $10,000.00 | Broome Bird Observatory will receive funding for a solar system to power their new interpretive public education facility. |
| Kununurra District High School (Kununurra) | $1,986.00 | Kununurra District High School will receive funding for a new hydroponics system for their school garden. Students will use the system to grow food; learning about waterwise agriculture, science and biology in the process. Excess produce will be donated to the Kununurra Community Kitchen. |
| Agunya Ltd (Broome) | $10,000.00 | A sustainable food garden will be built in central-Broome to facilitate community programs aimed at alleviating anti-social behaviour and providing participants with an opportunity to engage in meaningful work. |
| Broome Aboriginal Media Association (Broome) | $8,000.00 | Goolarri media will bring Broome school choirs and at risk youth together to develop a music clip, entitled ‘Home Is Where The Heart Is – Broome’. The music clip will celebrate Broome’s environment and the community. |
| Kununurra Neighbourhood House Inc (Kununurra) | $10,000.00 | Kununurra Neighbourhood House will benefit from waterwise infrastructure for their new facility, as well as gardens for native and edible plants. |
