Du Jiahao, CPC Hunan Provincial Committee secretary and Hunan Provincial People’s Congress Standing Committee director, met with Terry Branstad, US Ambassador to China, and his entourage in Changsha on May 29, 2019.
Secretary Du, on behalf of the CPC Hunan Provincial Committee and the People’s Government of Hunan Province, welcomed the guests. He introduced that Hunan has a long history, rich culture, beautiful natural scenery, and profound cultural heritage. It is an important agricultural, educational, and manufacturing powerhouse in central China. Hunan recently has been implementing the important instructions of President Xi Jinping; continuing to promote supply-side structural reform; strengthening environmental protection and ecological civilization construction; determining to eliminate polluting enterprises and backward production capacity; and, developing intelligent manufacturing such as engineering machinery, rail transit, and electronic information. He noted that Hunan will speed up the building of a modern industrial system and focus on promoting high-quality development.
He said, “Hunan and the United States have a long history of friendly exchanges. We have been attaching great importance to friendly cooperative relations with governments and enterprises in the United States. Hunan Province and the US states have been deepening collaboration. A large number of well-known American companies have invested in Hunan, and many advanced Hunan enterprises have sought fortunes in the United States.” He believed that both sides share common interests, huge communication and cooperation space, and profound prospects. “I hope that Mr. Ambassador’s visit will be an opportunity to further promote cooperation between Hunan and the United States in the fields of economy and trade, education, health care, and culture; and close cultural exchanges, to promote win-win development,” he added.
Ambassador Branstad remarked that this was his first visit to Hunan. Hunan’s beautiful ecological environment, profound history and culture, and rapid development were very impressive to him. He expected to provide channels and good services for the friendly cooperation between the United States and Hunan, and strengthen cooperation in agriculture, machinery manufacturing, rail transit, cultural education, medical and health care, to continuously improve the well-being of Hunan and American peoples.
The two sides also exchanged views on topics of common interests.
Jamie Fouss, US Consul General in Wuhan, and Hunan provincial leaders Xie Jianhui and Zhang Jianfei, also attended.
