Community engagement to help tackle youth crime in Townsville

203

Working closely with the community is the driving force behind the government’s five-point plan to tackle youth crime and build a strong local community in Townsville.

A new, community-focussed website has been launched to give everyone the opportunity to contribute their thoughts and ideas on the issues affecting the region, and to provide greater insight into the work being done by the Stronger Communities group.

Residents and community groups are encouraged to share their stories and information about their local community.

The website outlines the government’s holistic approach to address crime in Townsville, which includes:

  • addressing the cause of youth offending
  • enabling enhance service delivery across government
  • delivering youth justice crime prevention programs
  • boosting jobs and training in the area.

The launch of the website follows the success of Operation Oscar Merchant, a 30 day, city-wide policing blitz which saw a significant dent in crime across the city due to an increased police presence. An additional 10 officers will remain in the city as part of phase 2.
