Gov. Gary R. Herbert proclaimed an official day of remembrance today, on the 75th anniversary of June 6, 1944, D-Day.
D-Day marked a turning point in the war against the Axis powers when brave soldiers, sailors and airmen of the United States and our Allies first secured a toehold on mainland Europe — an essential battle to defeat the Nazis, liberate the continent, and ensure victory for the Allied forces in World War II.
The Governor said that he, the First Lady, and all Utahns remain in awe of the courage, dedication and sacrifices of the 156,000 servicemen that fought on the Normandy coast in the name of duty and freedom.
World War II forever changed the course of history, and the governor expressed that it is important we take a moment to remember this anniversary and reflect upon those veterans, their loved ones, and our communities so impacted by that tragic war.
Today the youngest D-Day veterans are in their mid-nineties. Gov. Herbert and his family express their thanks to all members of the Greatest Generation and thank them for their service and sacrifice.
We also recognize and thank those currently serving to sustain our freedoms.
