MANITOBA GOVERNMENT INTRODUCES AMENDMENTS TO HIGHWAY TRAFFIC ACT TO IMPROVE SERVICE DELIVERY

19

The Manitoba government introduced amendments to the Highway Traffic Act and the Drivers and Vehicles Act to update and modernize legislative requirements for the Medical Review Committee and Licence Suspension Appeal Board, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Doyle Piwniuk announced today.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, our government recognized the need for greater convenience and flexibility to allow access to government services across the province,” said Piwniuk. “Reducing wait times and improving service delivery will increase administrative efficiencies and provide greater access to resources for Manitobans.”

Amendments introduced would allow the public to submit online police reports and electronic driver signatures for motor vehicle collisions or hit and runs, offering greater flexibility and convenience for Manitobans when filing reports online rather than in-person at police detachments.

Proposed amendments also include changes to the Medical Review Committee membership criteria, which would allow for increased opportunities for board member recruitment and retention to reduce appeal wait times when a driver’s licence has been suspended, cancelled or refused on medical grounds by the registrar of motor vehicles, and allow assessments to be more responsive and timely.

Amendments to the Licence Suspension Appeal Board would allow the board to hear appeals by commercial vehicle operators when their safety fitness certificate has been suspended or cancelled and provides an independent appeal mechanism to improve hearing efficiencies.
