Have your say on South East Traffic Solution

201

The community is invited to have their say on the South East Traffic Solution, with consultation opening today on concept options for a number of projects.

The South East Traffic Solution is a multi-project, short and medium term vision, consisting of a suite of improvements on the Tasman Highway between the Hobart Airport and Sorell, and on the Arthur Highway south of Iron Creek Bridge. These upgrades are designed to help maintain the liveability of Sorell and the southern beaches by improving travel time reliability and safety.

The projects open for feedback are:

  • two extra lanes on the Tasman Highway between the Hobart Airport and first causeway
  • the Midway Point intersection solution to replace the roundabout at Penna Road with traffic signals
  • the Sorell southern bypass.

A feasibility study looking at duplication of the causeways and McGees Bridge is also underway.

Feedback can be provided via an online interactive map until Friday, 28 June 2019. The Department of State Growth is also running a series of drop-in sessions where concept options will be displayed for comment:

  • CWA Memorial Hall, Sorell, Tuesday 11 June, 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm
  • Okines Community House, Dodges Ferry, Monday 17 June, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
  • Midway Point community hall, Midway Point, Saturday 22 June, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Construction of the first of these projects is due to start in the 2020/21 summer.

Other projects as part of the South East Traffic Solution are already well progressed, with interim improvements to the Hobart Airport Roundabout completed earlier this year, in advance of the longer term Hobart Airport Interchange, for which tenders have now been called.

Consultation has occurred for an overtaking lane on the Arthur Highway, and tenders will be called soon.

More information about the South East Traffic Solution projects, and the online interactive map is available at the Transport website: https://www.transport.tas.gov.au/road/projects/southeasttrafficsolution

This is an important step towards the Hodgman Liberal Government’s election commitment to reduce commute times and make a safer road network for the South East.
