A Memorandum of Understanding establishing a formal process for collaboration on heritage management between the Government of Yukon and Yukon First Nations was signed at an official ceremony during the May 30, 2019, Yukon Forum in Carmacks, Yukon.
The agreement is the result of extensive work by the Heritage Working Group, comprised of representatives from all 11 self-governing First Nations, the Council of Yukon First Nations and Government of Yukon. The Memorandum of Understanding lays the foundation for all parties to work towards a clear and constructive process for heritage matters throughout the territory, including archaeological and paleontological discoveries, cultural artifacts, and the stewardship of heritage and historic sites.
The signing of the Heritage MOU is important as it sets out a process for collaboration on matters of traditional and cultural significance to Yukon First Nations.
