Today we have launched our Literacy Action Plan, a key part of ensuring that all Tasmanians have the literacy skills they need for the workforce and for everyday life.
Improving literacy performance has been prioritised as a key goal, and the Literacy Plan for Action provides a clear way to work towards our aspirational target of 100 per cent functional literacy for all learners.
The Action Plan, that identifies nine actions, has been developed through extensive engagement and collaboration with well over 100 department, industry and community stakeholders contributing.
Three priorities have been identified to strengthen literacy practice across the Department, including:
– Increasing access and support for learners to improve oral language and literacy.
– Developing evidence-based teacher practice across the curriculum.
– Building valid and reliable ways to measure learner growth.
This Action Plan further supports key initiatives such as the Government’s introduction of access to a literacy coach for every Tasmanian Government School and the continuing LIFT program, which has a strong focus on families learning together.
Literacy is a fundamental building block of learning and is crucial for a person to be able to participate in work and life. The Hodgman Liberal Government’s commitment to improving educational outcomes in Tasmania is demonstrated by our record $7.1 billion investment in education in this year’s budget.
