Saskatoon, Saskatchewan will be the first North American location for the 12th Plant Protein Ingredients Summit, taking place from May 29 to 31, 2019. The international event is designed to foster and advance meaningful business and research connections in the plant protein sector. The three areas of focus for the program are new plant protein ingredients, processing technologies and applications.
The summit is organized by the Netherlands-based Bridge2Food, an organization that brings professionals together to advance, accelerate and shape supplier networks. The Government of Saskatchewan has partnered with Bridge2Food on this event, to highlight Saskatchewan opportunities in value-added agriculture.
“Saskatchewan is emerging as a global leader and the hub for plant-based and alternative proteins, and the province is investing in measures to grow its value-added agriculture sector even further,” Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “This summit offers the opportunity to profile Saskatchewan’s strengths in this sector, and will give stakeholders from across Canada and the world the opportunity to connect with, and learn from, one another.”
The three-day event is expected to attract more than 300 attendees, 45 speakers and more than 50 exhibitors from around the world. Keynote speakers include representatives from Protein Industries Canada, the European Commission in Belgium, Nestlé and other industry and academic participants from around the world.
“It is fantastic to bring our Protein Summit to the heart of the great eco-system in Saskatoon,” Bridge2Food Founder and Chief Executive Officer Gerard Klein Essink said. “This is one of the true eco-systems in plant protein and plant-based foods in the world: the results of years and years of building, innovating and taking care of people. Saskatchewan’s agri-food sector exports reached $13.4 billion in 2018, and food manufacturing sales have doubled from $2.5 billion in 2007 to $5 billion in 2018. Saskatchewan also serves as the headquarters of Protein Industries Canada, established with a vision to position Canada as a leading global source of sustainable, high-quality plant protein and plant-based products, while substantially contributing to Canada’s economic growth and international trade.
