Second round of SA Heritage Grants opens

Owners of heritage properties are invited to apply for the second round of State Government Heritage Grants funding which opens today.

Grants will help owners of State Heritage properties to undertake vital preservation and restoration works.

The first round of grants helped unlock over $1.6 million for conservation of 27 properties across the state, including cottages, churches, hotels and woolsheds.

The heritage funding is a Marshall Liberal Government election commitment with grants helping to conserve and activate heritage places and invest in specialist trades and skills.

Minister for Environment and Water David Speirs said the state has a rich architectural, historical and cultural heritage and the State Government wants to see heritage places re-energised, either by adaptively reusing them, or by investing in them as tourism drawcards.

“We had around 70 applications for funding in the first round, and anticipate that there will be just as much interest in the second round,” said Minister Speirs.

“By providing a total of $250,000 to part-fund the 27 successful projects in round one, more than $1.6 million worth of conservation works will be achieved – and that’s a great return on investment.

“I encourage all State Heritage property owners to look at how the program can help them undertake restoration works which are important to the preservation of our history.

Round Two of the SA Heritage Grants Program, with a total of $250,000 available for grants, opens today and will close on 29 July 2019.

Up to $5,000 is available for simple projects, $10,000 for complex projects and $20,000 for major projects.

Conservation projects that benefit the public realm, activate under-utilised places, support specialised heritage training and/or facilitate tourism may get special consideration.

Grants cover up to 50 percent of the anticipated costs of conservation works, with the recipient responsible for matching funding dollar for dollar in cash or in-kind.
