Minister Responsible for Persons with Disabilities, Glen Abernethy, congratulated recipients of the 2019 NWT Disability Awareness Awards presented as part of the annual Disability Awareness Tea today in the Great Hall of the Legislative Assembly. Minister Abernethy issued the following statement recognizing this year’s award recipients:
“This year, the recipient of the Minister Responsible for Persons with Disabilities Award is a strong advocate for the accessibility needs of persons with disabilities. Passionate about ensuring inclusive participation in the community of Aklavik, Dean McLeod has been an active volunteer in his community for over three decades. I am pleased to present Mr. McLeod with f the 2019 Minister Responsible for Persons with Disabilities Award, and thank him for his commitment to making Aklavik an inclusive community.”
“Two other important awards were presented today ; the 2019 Community Champion Award, presented by the NWT Disabilities Council, was awarded to Tina McNeil of Fort Smith, and the 2019 Corporate Champion Award was presented by the NWT Human Rights Commission to the Hamlet of AklavikHam.”
“Thank you and congratulations to this of all of this year’s recipients who have played a significant role in enhancing the quality of life for persons with disabilities in the NWT. We are grateful to have such exceptional people in our communities who are leading the way towards a more inclusive and accessible NWT for all.”
“The release of our Disabilities Action Plan, the NWT Disability Framework and the GNWT Programs and Services for Persons with Disabilities Inventory is part of our commitment to making sure that all NWT residents can live active, productive and fulfilling lives in our communities. The success of our initiatives depends on organizations and individuals who work with us now and will work with us moving forward to provide feedback and input.
