The Governor and Mr Howard recently paid an Official Visit to China.
During an Official Visit to China, the Governor and Mr Howard met with representatives from government and a diverse range of industries, to strengthen Victoria’s working relationships, and to foster the already strong ties many of our Victorian institutions and organisations have built over many decades.
In the Hong Kong SAR, the Governor and Mr Howard toured the impressive headquarters of the Asia Society Hong Kong Centre, ahead of the opening of the Asia Society Australia Centre, scheduled to open in Melbourne in October 2019. They also met with representatives of the Macau Jockey Club, where they discussed the many ways in which our respective racing and allied industries could collaborate. The Governor was also pleased, as Patron of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, to accept on the MSO’s behalf the award for Business Innovation, Creative Industries and Digital Economy at the AustCham awards. They also met with the Hon.Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR.
The Governor and Mr Howard’s visit to mainland China focused on many areas of collaboration, including in innovation, sport and sports technology, health, design, fashion, the arts and arts administration. The Governor and Mr Howard joined representatives from a variety of Victorian sporting and tech organisations who were visiting Shanghai for the Festival of Australia and the Sports Summit. They attended an exhibition game between the Shanghai Jiushi and South East Melbourne Phoenix, the newest team in the National Basketball League, as well as an AFL match in Shanghai between St Kilda and Port Adelaide.
This Official Visit to China marked the 40th Anniversary of the Sister State relationship between Victoria and Jiangsu Province. Celebrating this close relationship was a particular focus of this visit, with the Governor and Mr Howard having the opportunity, in Suzhou and Nanjing, to meet with leaders of the Jiangsu Province, alumni of Victorian universities living and working in the province, representatives from the health, technology and arts sectors, and primary school children who have visited and studied in Victoria.
