Recently the Premier travelled to Far North Queensland to meet with community members from the Cairns and Weipa communities.
Cairns Indigenous Art Fair
While in Cairns, the Premier attended the opening night of the 2015 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair. The art fair is a major tourism drawcard event for the region, with almost $3 million in direct sales of art works injecting more than $7 million into the Queensland economy. The event itself has attracted more than 83,000 visitors to date.
The Cairns Indigenous Art Fair provides artists with an ethical pathway to take their art to a global audience and presents economic opportunities for artistic and Indigenous art centres.
The Palaszczuk Government supports the arts sector and while in Cairns, the Premier confirmed funding for Far North Queensland visual arts, dance, music and fashion, by pledging the Palaszczuk Government’s support for the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair for the next four festivals—with core funding through the Backing Indigenous Arts initiative.
