Inslee statement on EPA guidance that restricts states’ ability to protect clean water

208

Gov. Jay Inslee released a statement today following guidance from the federal Environmental Protection Agency that drastically narrows the scope and timelines for states’ certifications for water quality permits under Section 401 of the Clean Water Act.

“This new guidance, written without consultation with states and tribal communities, is the latest step in an unprecedented assault from the Trump Administration on the right of states to protect their waters and communities.

“Our state is currently reviewing the implications, but it is clear the Clean Water Act is now under direct and sustained attack by the federal government. We will not allow this or any president to illegally constrain our ability to protect Washingtonians’ right to clean water. I continue to stand with governors across the country in condemning actions that are clearly intended to restrict states from ensuring the health and safety of our people.”
