The Manitoba government introduced amendments to the Highway Traffic Act and the Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation Act to enable safe testing use of micromobility and low-speed modes of transportation and provisions to support shared streets, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Doyle Piwniuk announced today.
“Our government has committed to moving forward with climate resiliency and green strategies across the province,” said Piwniuk. “Expanding the use of reduced-emission vehicles will help lower greenhouse gas emissions and allow communities to connect in a safe and shared environment.”
The minister noted amendments introduced would allow pilot testing of micromobility devices such as personal transportation vehicles, electric scooters and low-speed vehicles on roads, offering greater opportunities to expand the use of active and alternative forms of transportation while maintaining safety for all road users.
Amendments also include provisions to support shared streets initiatives, authorizing municipalities to create bylaws to designate shared streets with safe speed limits where pedestrians, cyclists and motorists using recreational equipment would have equal access.
Amendments to the Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation Act would address specific insurance requirements for micromobility or low-speed vehicle pilot projects and include amendments related to the Drivers and Vehicles Act and the Off-Road Vehicles Act.
