Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, has issued the following statement on Bike to Work and School Week:
“Do you want to do something that is fun, healthy and active, and helps lower your carbon footprint? If so, I encourage you to join Bike to Work and School Week, happening May 27 to June 2, 2019.
“As a commuter cyclist myself, I will be participating in Bike to Work Week and look forward to seeing others on the road.
“The popularity of Bike to Work and School Week continues to grow. Last year, 58,000 people participated, surpassing the previous year, with thousands more British Columbians taking part.
“Cycling is a more affordable way to commute to work or school, and it helps people keep active in their everyday lives. By cycling instead of driving, we can relieve traffic congestion and help reduce pollution in our communities.
“Our government has a renewed focus on protecting our environment, while making life better for people. Recently, we introduced the CleanBC plan that sets us on the path to a more sustainable future.
“Under CleanBC, we are exploring ways to make cycling, walking, skateboarding and other modes of active transportation easier for people of all ages and abilities. We have been engaging with people in communities around the province and hearing great ideas on how to do this. We will be rolling out the active transportation strategy soon.
“You can get involved in Bike to Work and School Week by participating as an individual, with a team or encouraging your workplace, school or community to sign up.
“The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has contributed $745,000 over the last five years toward Bike to Work and School Week in B.C.
“I want to wish everyone a happy Bike to Work and School Week 2019!”
